On the former Magnet Mart hardware store site in Phillip, Monarch was engaged to demolish the existing building and construct a new McDonald's and Metro Service Station.
The McDonald’s restaurant emphasises the dual lane drive-through, with cutting-edge technology including timers and cameras, the first in the ACT. The large stainless-steel kitchen facilitates efficient service, complemented by a smaller dining area and PlayPlace available for walk-in customers.
Demolition uncovered additional challenges necessitating asbestos removal and addressing the discovery of an in-ground fuel tank. Deep excavation was required to remediate this and accommodate two 90,000-liter double-walled fiberglass fuel tanks. The project also incorporated environmental protection measures, rock excavation, and trenching for electrical infrastructure as well as civil engineering enhancements with the redesign of the sewer, stormwater, and civil pavement levels.
The precast concrete building features a structural steel canopy over the service station pumps and sustainable measures including an inground rainwater tank and solar panels to minimise environmental impact.
