The objective for Cinnabar was to provide an environment that was a modern interpretation of Asian dining giving the clientele a moody space that subtly reflects oriental detailing.

The client sourced all furniture and loose joinery items from China. These items would be delivered to site for Monarch to install and make any alterations required. Monarch also handled all fixed building works.

The scene is set on entry to the restaurant, with glistening brass screening defining the outdoor dining area as you approach from the boulevard. Walking through the front doors you are flanked by walnut cabinetry filled with an expansive range of wines, guarded by two terracotta warriors. The illuminated onyx back bar invites you further into the space, providing an impressive arrival point.

The materiality of the space was vital in providing a sophisticated interior without being one dimensional. Carefully considered layers of texture and tonal colour were selected to define different zones, from the bar to the open dining, the booth seating and the private areas.

Subtle oriental detailing was achieved through a combination of natural materials and mineral colours.

During construction the skilled team at Monarch were faced with a number of complexities which were successfully resolved with onsite problem solving and an experienced team of contractors, tradespeople and project managers.

To help minimise any discrepancies between overseas manufacture and onsite installation the design incorporated a degree of flexibility. Most imported items required onsite alterations, a task only practised and skilled builders could deliver on time, on budget and to such a high level of quality.
